Aaron Tucker desperately needed a job. This was a man who had just gotten out of prison following a 22 month stint (for a weapons charge), was living temporarily in a halfway house and had a 2 year old son to look after, so yes, finding a job meant a lot to him. It meant so much, in fact, that he had even bought a brand new shirt to wear just to ace the interview at Dinosaur Bar-B-Que in Stamford, Connecticut. He had prepped himself and was on the bus to his destination. And yet, he missed his interview.
As the bus was heading down the road, it came across a really bad car crash. The car was overturned and smoke emitted out its sides. Aaron Tucker asked the bus driver if he would stop the bus to help the wounded inside. The driver said no as he had a route to maintain. For the same reason, the driver informed him that he could not stop for even a few minutes to check if the people in the car were okay.
Aaron - who probably had the most to lose in that bus - got off and with the help of a few pedestrians pulled the injured man out of the smoking car. He then took off his clean, new shirt that he had bought specially for this interview and used it as a tourniquet around the injured man's head to stop the bleeding.
"Your family wants to see you. Keep your eyes open." he repeated over and over to the injured man, waiting there on the road without a shirt on his back until an ambulance finally arrived. The man survived.
Aaron did not get the job, obviously, as he never attended the interview. This was doubly tough because all he had left in his pocket that day as he left for the interview was $2 (Rs 130.) But the community that watched him risk his own life and give up his own chance at moving forward in life just to save a stranger's life did not forget his story. They set up a GoFundMe campaign to thank Aaron Tucker for his compassion, hoping to reach a target of $35,000 ( Rs 22.6 lakhs).
In 8 months, they have nearly doubled that target ($65,900 / Rs 42 lakhs) with strangers across the world, deciding they wanted to let Aaron know he mattered.
The list for this year's (2018) Heroes of Kindness can be found here.
Of course, I have been tracking these lovely human beings for years now and have found children as young as six years old and old women in their eighties from across the world who will restore your faith in humanity. You can find the entire list of Real-life Heroes of Kindness and Compassion here.

Great story. It isn't easy to give help to a stanger, even when you have less to lose than Aaron. He was really a hero. And it's so heartwarming, not just his gesture, but the fact the other normal people wanted to return it.
ReplyDeleteI'm just shocked that the bus driver wasn't willing to stop even to check on the wounded.

Inspiring, doc!
ReplyDeleteI can tell you, as a resident of the United States, that $2 American will barely buy someone a cup of coffee or a bag of dried beans - this hero was literally down to his last money. Dinosaur BBQ started in Syracuse, New York, about 70 miles from where I live - I've eaten there several times over the years and I wondered if Dinosaur BBQ stepped up in any way- the happy answer is YES, he was offered another interview later in the year. What a life changing event - I hope Aaron is blessed many times over for what he did.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for following up... happy to hear this
DeleteWe all need to read more such stories of real-life heroes in today's world. Thanks for choosing this theme!
ReplyDeleteGlad you are continuing with the theme this year too Doc. I loved this one particularly because Aaron, the good doer, got rewarded at the end as it should be.
ReplyDeleteGood and kind people exist in this world and people like Aaron reinforce our faith in them. Such an inspiring story!
ReplyDeleteGreat theme. Kindness and goodness are more often than not, not enough appreciated. A great gesture on your part to make the world know about so many unsung heroes. I am a first timer in the A-Z challenge and love your theme.
ReplyDeleteLike I said last year too, this is the best theme ever in all seasons of A to Z everywhere! I can only imagine the amount of time and effort it takes for you to read up on such people and learn more about them. All this while having a regular job and acing that as well. First of all, you need to realize that you are a hero too, Doc!
ReplyDeleteAaron Tucker is such a kind soul, his two year old is lucky to have such a role model as his father.
Looking forward to read more such real life stories of kindness. Especially the one about the six year old that you mentioned.
That is so inspirational! Looking forward to more stories.

ReplyDeleteStories like these reinstate your faith in mankind. Looking forward to red any more
ReplyDeleteIn a World, where we get to deal a lot of negativity on daily basis, your posts are like a soothing balm. They show us that humanity is not dead yet.
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing story. He really deserves much more credit for what he did than he got. If I'm brutally honest, I can safely say that I could never do what he did, if I was in a similar position. Great story sir
