Homeopathy - The 'science-defying strawberry milkshake' analogy

Dr Roshan Radhakrishnan

A lot of people are confused about the 'science' called Homeopathy. Despite the fact that over 200 years of testing has resulted in multiple government health bodies (even arch enemies Russia and USA concur) declaring emphatically that homeopathy has no scientific value and endangers people, so many opt for it as a form of remedy.

They are not aware that the principles of homeopathy - 'water memory' and 'succussion' - contradict the very laws of physics, chemistry and biology. It may seem tough for you to understand when we talk in terms of microscopic organisms so kindly allow me to simplify this pseudoscience for you with my 'strawberry milkshake' analogy.

two strawberry milkshake glasses

1. This is a glass of strawberry milkshake.

strawberry milkshake homeopathy

A glass of strawberry milkshake is sweet. Remember that fact. It will be relevant later.

2. Pour, Wash, Shake x 1000 times

Now I'm going to pour it all out and fill the glass with water, shake it nicely and then pour the water out. And then I am going to fill it again with water. Shake it. Pour it out. Fill it again with water. Shake it. Pour it out. I will do this a few thousand times.

A FEW THOUSAND TIMES, I repeat.

3. Your Glass of Water is now A Super-strong Strawberry Milkshake

Now I will serve you the final glass of water. And I claim that it is really potent strawberry milkshake.

glass of water homeopathy allegory
You tell me that it is not... that this is just a glass of water. I tell you you are wrong.

3.5 - My Reasoning

You see the water in the glass has its own memory.
This hundredth dilution remembers what the first dilution said the milkshake tasted like. The last few drops of the first batch of water which were clinging on to the glass passed on the memory to the next batch of water which in turn passed it on to the next batch of water which in turn... well, you understand.

You don't understand? Okay, let me make you believe by showing you its history. You see, this is an ancient INTERNATIONAL recipe that has been around for more than two centuries. Yes, I agree that even in this day and age where we can see the mitochondria inside a cell in action, we have still have not proven in 200 years that the drop of water 'remembers'.

Yes, I also agree that scientists all over the world have proven the opposite in repeated studies - that it is not strawberry shake I am serving. Allow me to be absolutely clear - repeated unbiased double-blind studies conducted in dozens of countries have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that the known laws of physics and chemistry do not change just for my glass of water. That the 1000 times washed glass does not contain any trace of strawberry milkshake.

But I believe. In fact, I will go a step further. I believe that the more diluted I made it, the stronger the effect of the milkshake became. Diluting it to a billionth degree of itself makes it more 'strawberry-ry' than diluting it to just a hundredth.

Who needs controlled studies across the world in scientific labs when I have the power of anecdotal evidence on my side? I have an aunt whose neighbor confirms that the strawberry milkshake does exactly what it was supposed to do (Oh, I'm getting to that and it's even juicier... no pun intended.)

4. Pour this 'thousand times washed' water on some cornflakes

Before that, let me just explain that there is a special way to serve it to ensure it works. I take some cornflakes and I pour a few drops of the last glass of water on to it. Then I wait for even those drops to evaporate. Now, I want you to take two flakes of corn twice daily for a hundred days.

bowl of cornflakes homeopathy allegory

5. Eating the cornflakes will make strawberry milkshakes taste like fiery chillies

And here's the coup de grace I was telling you about... are you ready for it?

Ingesting this evaporated, billionth-degree diluted drop of strawberry milkshake will act on your sweet-favoring senses and 'fix' those sweet senses.
We have treated using the 'like for like' policy.

Guntur Sannam chilly

From now on, if you ever come in contact with a strawberry milkshake, it will taste like Andhra's legendary fiery Guntur Sannam chilly to you.

Do you believe me?
If you do, I also own a Taj Mahal in the planet Uranus I would like to sell you.

Authors note -

There is a reason why even the open-minded National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) states that "there is little evidence to support homeopathy as an effective treatment for any specific condition."

Stuff like:

  1. 'water having memory',
  2. 'succussion / vigorous shaking',
  3. 'dilution increases potency' &
  4. 'like cures like' are the foundation stones of the alternative 'science' called homeopathy

It would be hilarious under normal circumstances - I could open a homeopathic alcoholic bar and keep serving you water in extremely well-washed glasses and charge you extra for potent vodka, could I not?

Unfortunately, what is not funny is that everyday, thousands of sick patients do get harmed by these 'corn flakes' because it delays treatment of their disease till it is too late and significant damage has occurred. There is a reason homeopathy has not been proven even after two centuries of studies. There is a reason it is banned in all major countries that focus on healthcare.

Homeopathy does not bend any laws of science.
It simply does not work.

Despite the fact that over 200 years of testing has resulted in multiple government health bodies declaring emphatically that homeopathy has no scientific value and endangers people, so many opt for it as a form of remedy.

    1. Depends. The less it is spinning, the stronger it is spinning apparently.

  2. Scientists are an endangered species, at least in the United States. There are some therapies in what we in the United States call "alternative medicine" that I would accept, but homeopathic medicine is not one of them. The placebo effect is powerful medicine, on the other hand.

    1. You have even odds with placebos and homeopathic pills. Gee, I wonder why?

  3. Wait, dilution increases potency is a theory they have??? Never knew that. That doesn't make any sense, why would anyone believe it.

People are always advocating homeopathic medicines but it never worked on me. Or for that matter, ayurveda. Some people swear by both, and I used to wonder if any of it really works or is it just in their heads. With this "dilution increases potency" theory, I'm sure it's not me, it's them.

That said, I'll admit that as a kid, the little sugar pills did hold a certain charm, effectiveness be damned :P

    1. This is the main problem. People just talk of others who had it and it worked. Nobody bothers to read the science behind it. Once that is done, it is hard to logically continue.

  5. Okay, what was this? :D

Dilution increases potency? Wow, after reading this post Dr. Watsa will be getting quite a lot of queries I must say :P

Homeopathy/Ayurveda nothing works for me. The good old "English" medicine is what I turn to always. Although I loved the white lil beads of homeopathy and diligently had them for years in the hope of curing migraine, all that it did for me is give me an allergic reaction to anything sweet :/

    1. It is not just normal dilution. It is dilution to a billionth and trillionth degree... that makes it more potent and effective apparently. Logic!

  6. It took me a while to get what you're coming to! Well, I've always relied on good old allopathy so wouldn't really know the difference.

  9. I never could make sense of homeopathy and the logic behind it but yes I have used homeopathy medicine on my kids and they did work. It's not that I solely rely on homeopathy but I do give it once in a while. Modern medicine has cured incurable diseases but we've to also understand that common illnesses like allergies have no cure in allopathy. I've experienced it first hand. So yes, despite its great achievements, modern medicine is not without flaw.

    1. Modern medicine definitely has its flaws but it atleast makes an effort to improve and evolve. Homeopathy is not a science. What you describe is the placebo effect or worse, stuff that is adulterated with actual allopathic drugs (plenty of documented cases by Homeopathic doctors in India, itself)
To say 'modern medicine' does not have all the answers is not a free pass to allow 'absurd lack of science and logic' to enter through the back door.
By that logic, people marrying their children to banyan trees also theoretically works because some of them do have successful marriages later. Doesn't make it a scientific or logical fact.
What I've described is the EXACT PRINCIPLES of homeopathy, just simplified. This has been researched over and over again and repeatedly debunked for over 200 of its 220 year reign. Plain and simple - homeopathy doesn't work. Just as marrying a woman to a banyan tree does not work.

  10. I have to admit I've taken homeopathic medicine for me as well as for the kids and, if I may say so, I felt we've benefitted too. I had no clue about the science behind homeopathy. That sounds weird. And now I'm not so sure at all.

    1. Many have taken Homeopathic medicines. There is no doubting that. And you may attribute your recovery to it for reasons I mentioned in the above comment. But once the science behind it is clear, it really cannot be logically carried forward. It does not hold up. Most importantly, Homeopathic results do not consistently perform the same in any study which any real drug would.

  11. ahhhh that Eureka moment when I read the last para and understood why you went crazy over strawberry milk.
You know there's an alternate medicine that can cure breast cancer - a baba blessed leaf with ointment and stuff, to be rubbed in the infected area. True Story!! Thankfully, the rest of the family members were wise enough to go to the hospital before any major harm was done.

I agree. homeopathy simply doesn't work for me - though I do know of people who know people who did homeopathy and it worked (although when you dig a bit deeper, most of them also took "normal" medicines on the side) ;-)

  18. Our neighbourhood homeopathic doctor's clinic is always crowded. How to explain? Why people go there and pay hefty fees unless they are benefitted by treatment. Of course I don't believe in any alt medicine.

  19. There is a gentleman in the comments above who states that homeopathy has helped his kids. I wonder how placebo effect affects kids. Is that not contradictory? Kids always complain if they have a problem, parents disbelieve them.
