Recipe: Spicy Squid Masala

Over 10 years of blogging, Godyears has pretty much gone through every possible genre there is - politics, romance, real life events, humour, anger, movies and books, cars and products and yes, even God.
And yet, somehow there have been very few food posts, which is blasphemous for a self-proclaimed foodie like me!

When I sat back and thought about it, it occurred to me that it was not for want of food or pictures. Over the past year, my mother has been actively trying out various recipes at home and assigning me the role of photographer-cum-taste tester (strictly in that order!). Part of the process was so that she could upload it onto food groups she is a part of on social media. Invariably, people ask her for the recipe and she obliges by typing it down in the comments section. I always felt that it was a loss since the recipes disappeared under the avalanche of comments and new posts by others.

Rather than letting the recipes go to waste, I figured it would be best utilised the old fashioned way: sharing it so that others too had a chance to try it out and enjoy the dishes in the luxury of their own households.

What I have in my possession is a treasure trove of recipes and food pictures that are a result of her hard work and deserve a wider audience. Most of these are modified from recipes she has collected as far back as the 80's when I was but a little pup.

Malabar seafood

Though we usually have all sorts of seafood from mussels to oysters and prawns, squid was not a common dish at our house. In fact, I don't think she has ever had it before prior to this dish a few months ago! My own first memory of having squid dates back to a small restaurant near the medical college I studied in back in 2004. I remember being a little squeamish before I tried it but then quickly realized that when well prepared, it can be truly awesome. After that, it became a standard dish that we ordered every time we dropped by that restaurant.

Malabar cuisine seafood

Regarding the recipe, I decided to make them into downloadable pictures so that those who wish to try them out can simple save them on to their devices and try them out at their leisure offline.

All the dishes and pictures you see have been prepared/clicked at home (unless specified) and tested by mua and I am still alive and well to write about it.

Over the course of the rest of this month, expect to see many more such dishes (ranging from seafood, desserts, starters and tea time snacks) - all prepared by my mother - with some unique to Kerala cuisine and some variations of international dishes. I will be looking to make all the recipes into easy downloadable single images so that you can save them on to your mobile/device and use them offline too. Of course, if you do try them out, it would be awesome if you gave me feedback here on what you thought of the dish.

Let me know what you think.

  1. Now that's something I am yet to try! I really appreciate your thought behind having the recipe in a downloadable picture format. As a novice cook who relies a lot on recipes posted on food blogs, this makes it a life saving option. All the best for the September challenge!

  2. This dish looks absolutely divine, and my mouth is now watering! Thank you for sharing both your gorgeous photos and what sounds like a delicious recipe - looking forward to seeing more in future days!

  3. Thanks. Its a lot more trouble writing them and aligning them onto a picture than I thought but I think it will be easier for readers and 'at home chefs' to just save the images in their mobile and use it whenever they want rather than have to go online over and over.

  4. I know the feeling. Many a time I do save a recipe offline via a link but then have to again go through the whole net process and finding the site. Occurred to me that maybe this was an easier method.

  5. Oh boy! This is going to be a double challenge for me, Roshan - having to wipe the dribble from my chin (double chin, get it? ;)! Fantastic idea to share and those lovely downloadables too. Had to pin it before I commented. Hug your Mom for me! :)

  6. I realize that. On second thoughts, also tell your Mom to give you a hug for me! You can turn those downloads in a powerpoint too.

  7. Yes, have lined up over a dozen. Its just an issue of making these pictograms (picto-recipes?) :)

  8. I don't like squid but I will watch out for your other recipes. Why don't you start a cooking blog, doc. That will be nicer, no?

  10. Trust me. Next time you are travelling and reach a seaside destination which serves it, order a nice fresh squid fry... Eat it while hot and crisp. More than any other seafood, this needs to be had while hot and crisp.

  12. While a few have suggested it, it would be too much of a burden for me. I already have one blog languishing in a corner which I now just use for the odd random blogging contest :)

  13. Right now, making them into images (via mobile) is a herculean task. Powerpoint tho door ki baat hai :)

  14. Man! Previously it was just the food and pictures. Now, you're encouraging us to make it too. Smart move, Doc.

  15. Save the recipe image. And keep coming back. The plan is to add a different recipe for most days of the month...

  16. Haha.. it was while looking back on all the pics in the Facebook album that the idea came. I had seen my mom write down the recipes painstakingly for friends in the comments section of various facebook groups so decided to save them and then make them into individual "post it" styled images which people could save and use whenever they felt like.

  18. The key is not to overcook it and make it rubbery... but other than that, it usually comes out awesome.

  19. Hi, I pinned your recipe because I need to make it someday - not a gourmet cook but likes to eat curries! Thanks a lot!

  20. None of the recipes I plan to showcase here will be gourmet recipes, rest assured :)
As for curries, do drop by throughout the month. I will be updating daily (touchwood) with a recipe daily and presently, there are two seafood and one soya recipe already ready and just waiting to be posted.
