MakeMyHome: Dining Hall - Back to your roots

Leave your mobiles on the drawers everyone because when we sit together for a meal, we share our smileys and jokes with the people on that table. The very simple act of dining together seems to have turned into a rarity today. Some sit by the television set, others take their food up to the room and those who actually make it down to the table end up fiddling with their mobiles at they eat.
How is it that we have become strangers within the same roof?

While candle light dinners do sound appealing as a couple, the fact remains that I would prefer not to have any lit items on a table where we as a family reach out and share or serve dishes across the table.
I would prefer to add a few ethnic touches to my decor across the room, leaving them to stand there unobtrusive as we dine yet visible to those looking out for the finer details.

The four Karigari musicians shall play silently as we dine, allowing us to drown in the laughter of our own melodies, of course.

Tradition says that the God of prosperity must sit by the living room or prayer room, bestowing his blessings upon those who pass by. But then, I never take the regular path now, do I?

The Lord with the legendary appetite is my guest and does not need to perform his duties here. Instead, the Aapno Ganapati Kalash and Diya Wood and clay wall decor will always be welcome by our side at our dining room. There simply cannot be a meal in this room without him, when you think about it - he is the provider, after all.

And then you have the mirror which is a quintessential feature of any dining room, though usually relegated to the wash area. I know that as per Vaastu, they say that a mirror placed opposite the locker of the house doubles wealth. So guess what? I am going to place my large mirror with the Rajhastani Warli Painting across the wall from our dear Lord Ganesha himself... for who better to double my prosperity than him?

The dining hall I designed is meant to embody a more traditional warm atmosphere so that even guests entering it feel as though they are at home. Sitting together across a table without any gaudy decor distracting you feels like the right way to go for me.
Anyway, While I clean up the table, why don't you look around?
Have you seen the other rooms in the house namely:
Go on. Take a look. Tell me what you think of it.

  1. Agree 100% - love those long meals with just good company, long chats and good food.... - and no cellphones, cpmputers etc... But kind of like those candle lights though....:-) The musicians look fun:-) Like the dining hall:-)

    1. I like the concept of the family time that seems to have gone missing now... everyone eats at their own schedule and often in front of the tv. There is no dinner by the table scenario

  3. I like the notion of focusing on food and conversation in the dining room, Roshan. We have a no-phone, no-television policy when we have our meals! You've put a lot of work into this series!

    1. Thanks Corinne.. Ya, I do want to make a genuine effort or none at all when it comes to contests and stuff like this :)
And sadly, that no-phone, no-television policy is the absolute rarity these days as far as I know among any of my colleagues in the medical field.. You'd be lucky to see your spouse and kids during dinner time frankly , with one or the other at work, for most of them...

  4. So true Roshan...These days a meal together isn't really a meal together anymore...Mobiles take away all the attention..Eating together for a family is sacred for me and I so understand your vision here...
